Anne Athena

2024 QEST Scholar - Ceramics
London

Anne is a ceramicist whose work explores figurative, surrealism, and symbolism to create narratives that open a window to the unseen worlds of the human being. Her practice materialises her studies and contemplations, heavily influenced by pattern, ornamentation, the figure, and the vessel. Anne holds a BA in ceramics from The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and an MA in ceramics from the RCA.

QEST’s funding will enable Anne to study with two master craftspeople. Firstly, she’ll learn large vessel wheel throwing, gas firing, and glazing with Michel Francois in Cornwall. Secondly, she’ll travel to Tuscany to the renowned LA MERIDIANA, International School of Ceramics, to take part in ‘The Domestic and The Wild’ course with master sculptress Beth Cavenar. These courses will provide Anne with an important opportunity to grow as a maker, further developing her technical and artistic skills.

Anne is passionate about sharing her knowledge with young makers and artists. She believes in contributing to her community by creating connections and inspiring others through her craft. By mentoring emerging makers, she hopes to encourage them to explore their own artistic journeys.

I want to encourage people to recognise that there always is more to a crafted object, to someone, or somewhere than meets the eye.
