Bia Melo

2020 QEST Scholar - Children's Book Illustration
London

An East London-based illustrator and screen printer, Bia is passionate about keeping the craft of illustration alive and evolving. Her illustration practice incorporates bold use of block colours and graphic elements inspired by screen printing, as well as analogical tools and hand drawing and lettering.

Bia has been designing for publisher Nobrow and Flying Eye Books, working as Tutor Assistant on the short course ‘From Pencil to Pixel’ at Central Saint Martins, and showcases her work across the country at fairs like ELCAF (London), Hifest (Hastings), Bristol Comics Fair and at House of Illustration. Her work was also shortlisted at the WIA awards.

A QEST Scholarship will support Bia during her MA in Children’s Book Illustration at Cambridge School of Art, where she will develop her drawing and storytelling skills and produce at least two children’s books as author and illustrator.

I’m as passionate about illustrated books as a child! I love to play with illustration, characters and print, and create works that connect with people and remind them of the nice things in life.
