Carlyn Lindsay

2025 QEST Turners’ Company Scholar - Woodwork, woodturning
Colchester

Carlyn Lindsay is a designer-maker based in Colchester, creating bespoke commissions and pieces for private collections. Carlyn’s process is unique, laminating British sycamore with veneers in a self-designed press, and turning the blocks on a woodturning lathe, by hand to reveal graphic lines and bold forms before finishing each piece.

With a background in 3D design and over 35 years as a professional maker, Carlyn is now at a pivotal moment. Her work is increasingly ambitious, incorporating new elements such as gilding, silver and other fine metals, she is seeking advanced training to develop these skills to the same level as her existing woodwork.

With QEST support, she will train with master woodturners Colwin Way, Richard Findley and Ulf Jansson in Sweden, as well as silversmith Lillo Pisano and gilder Richard Walker. A mentor and Vice Chair of the Register of Professional Turners, Carlyn is committed to pushing boundaries in woodturning — and to passing on her skills to inspire future craftspeople and elevate the perception of turning within the world of fine art and craft.

I am a passionate maker and feel privileged to be awarded this grant, enabling me to push the boundaries further with my work.
