Catherine Dunckley

2022 QEST Grandey’s Place Scholar - Bookbinding
Derbyshire

Catherine is a predominantly self-taught fine bookbinder who runs her own business, Catherine Rose Books. She creates fine leather bindings using techniques including hand-dyed leather inlays and onlays, leather joints and doublures, silk sewn endbands and more.

A QEST Scholarship will enable her to build on her existing fine binding skills and learn more advanced techniques. She will take fine binding courses with the two best UK bookbinding teachers – Kathy Abbott and Glenn Malkin – and five shorter masterclasses with other bookbinders to focus on contemporary leather techniques and finishing, design binding, edge gilding and tool maintenance.

Bookbinding elegantly unifies two of my seemingly opposing characteristics – rigid perfectionism and fluid creativity – into a book as a work of art, both beautiful and functional. I look forward to perfecting my binding skills, and hope to one day pass on that knowledge to other binders.
