Chloe Rutherford

2018 QEST Leathersellers' Company Scholar - Saddlery & Harness Making
Cambridgeshire

Chloe founded Three Shires Saddlery & Harness in Cambridgeshire, aged 19, whilst studying for the Worshipful Company of Cordwainers Diploma in Saddle, Harness & Bridle Making at Capel Manor College. She specialises in hand-stitched, bespoke leatherwork and customers include Royal Warrant Holder Bennington Carriages.

The QEST Leathersellers’ Company Scholarship enabled Chloe to become a fully qualified Saddler & Harness Maker with The Society of Master Saddlers. As well as learning the traditional skills of collar making, she took courses and exams at The Saddlery Training Centre in Salisbury, including her City and Guilds Level 3 skills assessment (Saddle, Harness and Bridle exams), as well as at Saddlers’ Den with John McDonald.  Most of her prize-winning work is equine related, such as restoring vintage horse driving collars & harness and making bespoke handstitched bridles.

As a keen horse-rider and enjoying practical subjects at school, I was able combine these two passions into a career. I have enjoyed working on some lovely antique harness repairs but I also get orders for very modern anatomical bridles, so every day brings a different challenge.
