Chloe Rutherford

2018 QEST Leathersellers' Company Scholar - Saddlery & Harness Making

Chloe founded Three Shires Saddlery & Harness in Cambridgeshire, aged 19, whilst studying for the Worshipful Company of Cordwainers Diploma in Saddle, Harness & Bridle Making at Capel Manor College. She specialises in hand-stitched, bespoke leatherwork and customers include Royal Warrant Holder Bennington Carriages.

The QEST Leathersellers’ Company Scholarship is enabling Chloe, a Registered Trainee of the Society of Master Saddlers, to become a Qualified Saddler & Harness Maker. She will take courses and exams at The Saddlery Training Centre in Salisbury, including her City and Guilds Level 3 skills assessments. Although most of her prize-winning work is equine related, the skills she has learnt are transferable to many other areas and her recent projects have included restoring a vintage golf bag and replacing the leather on a set of bellows.

As a keen horse-rider and enjoying practical subjects at school, I was able combine these two passions into a career. I have enjoyed working on some lovely antique harness repairs but I also get orders for very modern anatomical bridles, so every day brings a different challenge.
