Ellie Wright

2024 QEST Apprentice - Piano tuning & restoration
Lanarkshire

Ellie is an up-and-coming piano tuner and restorer, determined to ensure the craft remains alive in Scotland. With experience working in wood and metal and a classically trained violinist and pianist, she has a keen interest in piano tuning and repair.

A QEST Apprenticeship will give Ellie the opportunity to continue to learn from masters Roy O’Neil and Anne Burton, facilitated by Glasgow Piano City. She started volunteering with the organisation in 2022 and has grown her skillset since.

With no college courses or training centres operating in Scotland for more than 20 years, Roy and Anne are eager to ensure the craft doesn’t become extinct and believe passing on their skills to Ellie is a key way to try and achieve this. Through her QEST training, she will increase her skills in aural tuning, regulation and restoration of pianos, and progress to tune and restore other early keyboard instruments with similar mechanisms like the harpsichord, dulcitone and virginal.

Ellie’s other goals are to take on clients of her own, continue to work for Glasgow Piano City as a freelancer and extend her working radius to the Highlands and Islands.

It’s a privilege to be such an integral part of the dialogue between musicians and their instruments. By learning to maintain and restore the piano and other early stringed keyboard instruments, I’m able to not only learn about their history, but also help forge a narrative for their place in the future.
