Gabrielle Mitchley

2024 QEST Saddlers’ Company Scholar - Saddlery and harness making
Greater Manchester

Gabrielle is a qualified saddler based in Wigan, Greater Manchester who has a strong desire to master the craft of collar-making. Alongside completing her apprenticeship with Chris Taylor at Saddlers Den, Gabrielle studied under Mark Romain at the Saddlery Training Centre where she gained her level 3 bridle and saddle making qualifications as part of the Saddlers Company Millenium Apprenticeship.

A QEST Scholarship will enable Gabrielle to improve her driving collar and harness making skills as well as how to fit them correctly for the comfort of the animal.

Her training includes one-on-one training with master collar and harness maker John McDonald where she’ll learn how to make several gig collars using traditional techniques and materials. Gabrielle will also undertake five days of practical training with the Society of Master Saddlers which will help her work towards her Society of Master Saddlers Saddle Fitting Qualification.

Gabrielle’s goal is to establish her own saddlery and harness making business in her local area. She also wants to teach courses, starting off with belt and dog collar-making before advancing to bridle-making and collar-making.

Horse comfort and welfare is always the top priority, that’s why all pieces should be made to be beautiful, comfortable and sustainable.
