Heidi Broad

2017 QEST Ana Scholar - Fine Art

Heidi was awarded a QEST Scholarship to study realism at the Florence Academy of Art in Italy. She took her experience of photo-realism, gained at Bauhaus University, to Classical Realism by working with life models on figurative studies and portraiture under a natural north light.

Heidi draws her inspiration from the Old Masters such as Rembrandt, Sargent and Velasquez. Taught in the strict methodology of Charles Bargue, her work aims to capture atmosphere through lighting. After completing her first year in the intensive drawing programme, Heidi was awarded a scholarship from the school to continue her practice into the intermediate programme and she was later awarded Best Figure Drawing of the Year. Heidi’s work is now featured on the Florence Academy of Art website as one of the outstanding students in the class of 2018.

Paintings and drawings should be produced at the same time of day, in order to replicate the lighting conditions the model is placed in daily. The lighting within the composition is then designed by the artist and compressed to intensify the impression of the figure in space.
