Joanna Williams

2023 QEST Howdens Scholar - Blacksmithing
Bristol

Joanna has been creating unique contemporary ironwork for more than 17 years.

She began sculpting with metal during her BA Honours Degree at Dartington College of Arts and trained for a further three years at the National School of Blacksmithing. In 2017, she was awarded a Certificate of Merit by the Worshipful Company of Blacksmiths in recognition of her design skills and technical ability.

A QEST Scholarship will enable Joanna to expand and enhance her repertoire of blacksmithing and metal work skills by attending a series of masterclasses in America. She will attend two national conferences, visit the Metals Museum and explore innovative and sustainable blacksmithing methods at the New Agrarian School.

Elevating her craftsmanship to new heights of refinement will allow Joanna to reinvent her practice and create new dynamic work.

She intends to promote diversity and inclusivity within the craft and share her knowledge through teaching classes, delivering lectures, and establishing a mentorship program.

Establishing a tactile connection is crucial to me, as I want people to physically interact with my work and ‘touch the art’.  My QEST Scholarship will enable me to discover new approaches to translate metal in fresh and exciting ways.
