Kendall is an artist and maker who works with textiles and natural dyes. Her background in languages led to an interest in ancient texts and the fragmented nature of their survival. This is reflected in her translucent constructions from paper and metal yarns, in the abrasions of her etched surfaces, and in her particular interest in paper and ink. She uses painting and mark-making as well as erasure to produce multi-layered works in two and three dimensions. Her work, influenced by the simple beauty of Japanese crafts, is characterised by fineness and detail. It has been exhibited in the UK, Japan and the USA. Kendall has an MA in Woven Textiles from UCA, Farnham and, following an award from the Arts Society, she is based at Cockpit Studios.
A 2023 QEST Scholarship will enable Kendall to learn the traditional Japanese craft of paper spinning and shifu weaving from renowned expert Hiroko Karuno. She will also participate in a four-week residency in an artisanal paper-making region of Japan, practising and developing her new skills. Her new knowledge will allow Kendall to share this endangered craft skill through workshops back in the UK and promote paper yarn as an ecologically low-impact material. It will also enable her to develop new creative processes, attract further gallery interest, and explore opportunities in the applied art sector, particularly in architecture and interior design.
