KT Yun

2023 QEST Scholar - Hot glass sculpture
Somerset

KT is a highly experienced hot glass artist with a fascination for insects, determined to merge these two passions together. She is the co-founder, director and manager at The Glass Hub – a centre for glass education in Wiltshire.

KT’s vision is to fuse art with science to make insects out of glass, a desire she’s held for over 30 years. A QEST Scholarship gave her the opportunity to refine her skills to achieve this.

As part of her training, KT embarked on a training programme with four specialist glass makers: Helga Watkins Baker, Scott Benefield (QEST Alumni), Andrea Spencer (QEST Alumni) and Steve Frey. KT worked with these four makers to explore kiln forming, hot glass ‘pick-ups’, flame working and cold-working techniques, alongside other technical skills that push the boundaries of glass making.

KT aims to use the knowledge she gained to produce a body of work for the Natural History Museum in 2025. In addition, KT’s goals are to create ground-breaking exhibitions and to pass on her knowledge and enthusiasm to young people and the wider community.

I’m fascinated by the beauty of insects, using glass to express what I discover in this microscopic world. I aim to highlight declining species, by enlarging them in glass for all to appreciate. I use hot glass sculpting, fusing, flameworking and coldworking as primary techniques, merging processes, skills and a passion for entomology.
