Lewis Walduck

2023 QEST Anthony and Elizabeth Mellows Charitable Settlement Apprentice - Horology
Hampshire

Lewis’s first words were ‘tick tock’ and he has had a long interest in clocks. He began a full time apprenticeship at The Clock Work Shop when he left school in 2021, and has subsequently been training to become a full time horologist and clock conserver/restorer.

A 2023 QEST Apprenticeship will support further training with Richard Scorey at The Clock Work Shop, which will build up to Lewis ultimately taking achieving a BHI Diploma in the Repair, Restoration and Conservation of Clocks (level 5) and becoming a competent clock restorer.

I’m hugely interested in clockmaking from the 17th century as it was a time when horology was at its zenith and if I can learn to make components and repair clocks to the same standards of my forbearers I would be very happy! We always say in the workshop that we want the next person who repairs the clock to think: ‘that person did a great job’ because there’s nothing better than repairing a clock that’s been repaired well in the past.
