Rosie O’Driscoll

2024 QEST Radcliffe Trust Apprentice - Scrivening
London

Rosie is a keen scrivener based in London. Her interest in letterforms developed over several years working as a signwriter and mural artist alongside studying for an MA in Illustration at the University of the Arts London.

Rosie has been working as a trainee calligrapher at the College of Arms since 2023 – she is fascinated by the unique way calligraphy, illuminations and heraldry combine script and image to tell a story.

Through a QEST Apprenticeship with Amy Hunnisett at the College of Arms, Rosie will learn traditional skills and techniques including heraldic painting and illumination as well as develop proficiency in a range of calligraphic scripts. She will develop an understanding of the different styles of handwriting the College uses for its records and eventually enter pedigrees and text into the records.

Rosie’s long-term goal is to be a proficient scrivener and to ensure this ancient craft is preserved in the UK.

I’m excited to continue to learn and develop skills using these traditional materials and techniques. I hope to continue to work in areas which utilise and develop these skills and explore their relevance and application within a contemporary context.
