Glasgow-based Sally Morrison is one of only a handful of craftspeople in the UK specialising in watch dial enamelling. Working in vitreous enamel, she fuses multiple thin layers of glass to metal in a kiln, before grinding and polishing to achieve exceptional colour, depth, and durability. This demanding craft, where perfection is measured in fractions of a millimetre, requires balancing the precision of watchmaking with the unpredictable nature of glass, which can crack, warp, or develop inclusions.
Sally honed her skills at anOrdain, a craft-focused watch manufacturer, where she was among the first enamellers and helped shape the company’s distinctive approach to enamel dial production. Now Head of Research and Development, she continues to innovate within this rare field.
Through her QEST grant, Sally will undertake advanced training in cloisonné and champlevé enamelling with Vanessa Lecci in Switzerland, and in hand-push engraving for champlevé enamelling with Jane Short in Brighton. This training will refine her technical mastery and enable her to mentor emerging enamellers, helping to preserve and elevate the endangered craft of watch dial enamelling within the UK watchmaking industry.
