Sarah Ready

2022 QEST Scholar - Withy Pot Making
Devon

Sarah is a fisherman who also practises the endangered heritage craft of withy pot making. This skill used to be central to coastal communities around the UK, until plastic alternatives replaced the willow pots, but Sarah is determined to bring back the sustainable practice to benefit both the coastal communities and the environment.

QEST funding will support Sarah’s continued teaching from Dave French, fifth generation withy pot maker, who is one of the last practitioners of this craft in the UK. Sarah plans to attend and demonstrate at events around the UK, increasing knowledge and interest amongst the public and sharing her skills with retired fishermen and other interested makers to ensure the craft survives.

I eat, sleep and breathe fishing and have always been drawn towards the traditional withy pots ever since I was a child. I am blessed to have the opportunity to learn the craft from a fifth generation traditional lobster pot maker, which is a unique position to be in. There is something very beautiful about making a lobster pot yourself from willow, placing it in the sea, and catching a lobster or crab from the beautiful pot that you have made. Having heritage within the natural environment, and using the heritage item made for the purpose that it was intended, is a vibrant way of ensuring the heritage thrives into the future.
