Sophie Barrett

2018 QEST Apprenticeship - Theatre design

Sophie was the first ever apprentice in the Scenic Art department at the National Theatre. Her QEST Apprenticeship funding provided the tools and specialist equipment needed for the job, as well as courses to help her in specific areas of Scenic Artistry such as drawing and portrait painting. In 2019 Sophie won the London region award for Intermediate Apprentice of the Year.

Upon completing her apprenticeship, Sophie secured a job as a freelance Scenic Artist with Illusion Design and Construct, the company behind the sets of Jesus Hopped the A Train (Young Vic), Sylvia (Old Vic), The Colour Purple (Leicester Curve) and Secret Cinema events.

The opportunity provided to me by the National Theatre has been life changing, and before I got this apprenticeship I never imagined I would be where I am today. QEST has enabled me to learn new skills and given me an excellent platform to showcase my work. I am thankful for the opportunity.
