Tobias Poultney

2020 QEST Scholar - Boatbuilding

Tobias begun his career working with Parnall Engineering Advanced on technology and design in the marine sector, before beginning training to become a shipwright. Traditional wooden boat building is a dying art in the UK, and a lack of new young trainee shipwrights taking up the trade threatens the heritage of the British boat building industry. Tobias is passionate about pursuing a career in this field, and he wants to make a positive impact on the craft with his sustainable approach.

QEST funding will support additional training in blacksmithing, welding and chainsaw skills and the purchase of traditional tools.  This will allow him to further investigate his craft and he will document the whole experience to pass on all that he learns.
