Zoe Watts

2018 QEST Arts Scholars' Company Scholar - Silversmithing
Gloucestershire

Zoe is an award winning silversmith and jeweller working with traditional techniques including the ancient art of chasing and repousse. She seeks inspiration from the movement of energy within the natural world and is intent upon translating this ‘undulation’ and ‘scrumptious’ textures into her pieces, for example ‘the twisting turmoil of a storm, or the curling wave.’

In the summer of 2018, Zoe completed her QEST Scholarship in Shetland with Master Silversmith and Chaser Rod Kelly. Here she was able to focus deeply on her chasing technique as well as picking up many other useful silversmithing and toolmaking tips and tricks. In Shetland she also began work on the piece ‘Earth, Air, Fire, Water’ which went on to win the Silver Award in the Chasers’ Senior section at the 2019 Goldsmiths’ Craft and Design Awards.

I enjoy nothing more than absorbing myself in nature; there is so much beauty to see if you pause to look. Using hammers and steel punches to translate my inspiration into the beautiful medium of silver is my passion and I hope to explore and experiment so much further in future.
