The Other Side of the Story: QEST Alumni at Penhaligon’s King’s Road

The Other Side of the Story is the latest installation in Penhaligon’s The King’s Road Collection in partnership with QEST, bringing exceptional contemporary UK craft to new audiences within their Chelsea boutique.

Part gallery, part boutique, the space brings scent, craft and artistry together through a programme of three curated installations each year. Following The Things Between Us, The Other Side of the Story continues this creative partnership with an exhibition exploring hidden histories, perception and the narratives embedded within materials and objects.

Inspired by the idea that appearances rarely tell the whole story, The Other Side of the Story encourages us to look closer. The four featured makers each work with materials that can reveal more than first meets the eye. Through paper, wood, marbling and glass, their practices explore transformation, technique, material history and the relationship between what we see and what lies beneath.

The exhibition features four distinctive QEST Alumni whose practices demonstrate the breadth of contemporary British craft:

Angela Fung specialises in large-scale architectural origami installations and is co-founder of Fung + Bedford. A 2022 QEST Winch Design Scholarship supported her in developing advanced origami techniques and expanding her practice.

Designer and maker Sofia Karakatsanis creates wooden furniture and sculpture, combining traditional craftsmanship with contemporary techniques. Her 2022 QEST Jasper Weldon Scholarship supported advanced training in carpentry, including steam bending and lamination.

Natascha Maksimovic is a marbling artist working with the traditional Japanese technique of Suminagashi. Her 2024 QEST Scholarship is supporting her exploration of sustainable, botanical inks and new approaches to colour and surface.

Anne Petters is a glass artist whose technically innovative practice pushes the boundaries of traditional glassmaking. Her 2014 QEST Garfield Weston Foundation Scholarship supported a residency at Pilchuck Glass School, helping her develop her distinctive kiln-casting and pâte de verre techniques.

Coinciding with the launch of Penhaligon’s new fragrance, The Manoeuvres of the Baroness, the exhibition echoes its enigmatic character and invitation to question what lies beneath.

The Other Side of the Story is on display at Penhaligon’s, 25 King’s Road, London SW3 4RP, until 1 November 2026.
