Eleanor Smith

2023 QEST RWHA Scholar - Conservation – books & library materials
Hampshire

Eleanor is a Hampshire-based craftsperson who is committed to spending her lifetime mastering the craft of book conservation. Originally from Australia, Eleanor is an advocate for making conservation more accessible for underrepresented communities.

She completed a Graduate Diploma from West Dean College in 2022, and QEST funding will allow Eleanor to build on this knowledge by supporting her to study a one-year MA in Conservation of Books and Library Materials at West Dean. Course subjects include Gothic and Coptic binding, parchment conservation and iron-gall ink analysis.

This Scholarship opportunity will enable Eleanor to expand her skills so she can work as a fully qualified conservator within a British heritage institution. Eleanor feels passionately about ensuring key practical skills for book preservation are not lost and is determined to pass on her skills to other emerging makers.

Books are mechanically complex works of art and craftsmanship that chart our history through form and content. They are vital repositories of information and hold great cultural significance, requiring a specialist approach to their structure, handling, storage and treatment.
