Tristram Bainbridge

2010 QEST Scholar - Furniture conservation

Tristram is a furniture and decorative arts conservator currently running a conservation practice together with his wife, Abigail Bainbridge, a book and paper conservator. In 2010 QEST funded his final year of study at West Dean College, which enabled him to gain a MA in Conservation. He works on a wide variety of wooden objects for private clients and public institutions, including English Heritage and The National Trust. Since working at the Victoria and Albert Museum, Tristram has specialised in Asian lacquer and uses Asian and Western techniques to conserve lacquer in his London-based studio.

After completing a degree in art history, and with a love of woodwork and craft skill, I found that the world of conservation – restoration was the perfect amalgamation of the practical and theoretical engagement with historic objects.
