Guy is a Nottingham-based historical clarinet maker with 18 years of experience as a clarinet player himself.
Practising this rare craft since 2008, Guy is determined to fill a gap in the UK market for the making of 19th century Romantic clarinets for professional musicians.
QEST funding will enable Guy to improve his current work, develop a fine authentic finish with his instruments and become more innovative. His training includes learning from master instrument makers Daniel Bangham and Peter Worrell plus techniques from the late master restorer Rainer Weber. Guy will also travel to museums in Germany and Edinburgh as part of his research.
With Daniel and Peter, Guy will sharpen his skills and learn new ones, including exploring historical staining of boxwood, fabricating brass basset horn bells by hand, improving mouthpiece making techniques, and using a pantograph machine for milling key parts. Following his QEST training, Guy hopes to make clarinets with more complex keywork, offer high end restorations for museums and run his business in a more efficient way.
