Joseph Ijoyemi

2023 QEST Crown Paints Emerging Maker - Metal work and sculpture
Greater London

Joseph Ijoyemi is an Afro-Swedish multi-disciplinary artist based in London. He draws his inspiration from life experiences and conversations, and his work primarily consists of murals, paintings, sculptures and installations that combine imagery and materials.

Joseph is passionate about pushing the boundaries of what is possible in metal casting and wood sculpture – he will explore this as part of his QEST training. Joseph will undergo one-to-one mentoring and training with Gordon Ilett, who has previously collaborated with leading artists like Marc Quin and Yinka Shonibare.

The hands-on training will allow Joseph to enhance his technical skills and expand proficiency in wood and metal work. Joseph will also take part in a course at the Artisan Foundry in Liverpool to further delve into the techniques and processes of metal casting.

His long-term goals are to create public artworks for exhibitions, establish himself as a prominent maker and become a commission candidate for the Fourth Plinth. Joseph is also passionate about becoming a mentor to young makers, particularly within the black community.

Through my craft and works, I navigate the intricate tapestry of emotions, translating the simplicity of everyday conversations into artistic responses; using diverse materials to weave narratives that provoke thought and unveil new stories, evoking a profound sense of connection and creativity.
