Manuel Mazzotti

2015 QEST Clothworkers' Company Scholar - Bookbinding
London

Manuel is the founder of MAZZOTTI BOOKS, an independent bookbinding and printing studio situated in East London. The studio’s primary aim is to be a platform for research into contemporary bookbinding, challenging preconceived ideas about what a book should look like and what materials should be used. Second to this, the studio promotes the book as the most effective and relevant medium for sharing stories. Moreover MAZZOTTI BOOKS seeks to bridge the gap between a traditional bindery and a publishing company, highlighting the variety of possible solutions for limited editions books.

The studio’s work is part of permanent museum and library collections including Stanford Libraries, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, Tate Library, The British Library, London College of Fashion and National Poetry Library. QEST enabled him to develop specific subjects in contemporary bookbinding, learning from the very best master bookbinders in their own fields.

It is not enough for me to make useful objects. My aim as a bookbinder, designer and maker is to understand, deconstruct and reveal the physical nuances of my favourite medium; the book.
