Maxwell Anderson

2025 QEST Julia Rausing Trust Scholar - Metalwork, Blacksmithing
Hereford, West Midlands

Maxwell Anderson is an artist blacksmith whose practice centres on bespoke architectural metalwork for residential, commercial and heritage settings. Through his studio, Anderson Blacksmithing, based in Herefordshire, he works closely with clients, architects and designers to create forged railings, balustrades, gates and sculptural details, pieces that balance functionality with aesthetic precision.

Maxwell spent over a decade working across the UK and internationally, most notably at Mystic Forge Ironworks in Calgary, Canada, under Master Smith Mark Pearce. Now back in his home county, he continues to contribute to the wider blacksmithing field through teaching, encouraging innovation and craftmanship in the next generation of makers.

With QEST support, Maxwell will undertake an MA in Forged Metal Arts at Hereford College of Arts, alongside training with leading craftspeople. This will offer vital time and academic support to experiment and develop a new body of work that bridges art, design and function. His ambition is to move beyond commissioned architectural pieces and develop a range of forged furniture and interior objects that push the creative potential of blacksmithing.

As a blacksmith, I am enamoured with the material potential of forged metal. The forms, textures, and structures within its distinct vocabulary are what I strive to showcase in my work. The QEST grant will give me the time and space to explore this further as I undertake the MA in Forged Metal Arts at HCA.
