2019 QEST Garfield Weston Foundation Apprentice - Horology

QEST Garfield Weston Apprentice Patrick is undertaking a full time apprenticeship in watchmaking at J E Allnutt & Son Ltd in Midhurst, under the supervision of Master, Geoff Allnutt, MBHI. The QEST funding predominantly contributes towards his salary as well as assisting in the cost of setting up a bench.

Patrick’s training includes practical bench experience as well as external courses at the British Horological Institute. The apprenticeship involves watch repairing and restoration, tool making exercises, theory and technical drawing examinations together with instruction and extensive use of all machinery and tools in the workshop. When Patrick completes the 3 year training he will be eligible to become a Member of the British Horological Institute, MBHI. Geoff would like Patrick to continue in his training and complete the restoration of complex watches, leading him to become a Fellow of the British Horological Institute, FBHI.

The industry needs highly skilled watchmakers capable of manufacturing obsolete parts to maintain the integrity of these wonderful objects and not just technicians capable of fitting new parts.
Patrick is making very good progress, is hard working, conscientious and a pleasure to have in the workshop.
Geoff Allnutt, MBHI
