Tom Palmer

2022 QEST Scholar - Sculpture
East Sussex

Tom is a sculptor and designer who combines ancient and contemporary materials and techniques. His practice increasingly focuses on work in stone, namely large sculptural vessels in translucent alabaster. This work was selected for the London Craft Week 2020 exhibition 300 Objects and more recently the Homo Faber Venice Biennale 2022 and Guide.

QEST funding will enable Tom to travel to Pietrasanta in Italy to develop his specialist skills in working with marble. He will spend six weeks training under Kyle Smith, who has over 25 years experience teaching marble carving workshops. The tuition will be supplemented with visits to local artisans, studios and marble quarries, using both traditional hand-carving methods and robotic CNC carving, covering the full breadth of possible techniques and approaches to working with marble.  On returning to the UK, Tom aims to continue developing and refining his skills in working with stone, producing contemporary stone pieces of increasing scale and scope.

Much of Tom’s work has been informed by his ability to work with an ever-expanding range  of materials and skills both ancient and contemporary. He has a particular fascination in the world of Medieval and Renaissance Europe but also the aesthetic and art of later Japanese makers and artists.
