Jack Baker

2024 QEST Apprentice - Furniture making
Devon

Jack is a young furniture maker based in Devon with a goal to produce high-end, free-standing furniture. A graduate from the Rowden Atelier School of Fine Woodworking, Jack is committed to working at the forefront of craft and design in the UK.

A QEST Apprenticeship will enable him to continue to work for and learn from Bobby Knight-Mills of Bobby Mills Studio in North Devon. Bobby has an international client base and has gallery representation in the UK, Canada and Japan. With Bobby, Jack will master the technical and physical woodworking techniques that Bobby uses and also learn the behind-the-scenes aspects of running a business.

His training will include developing fundamental wood turning skills, tool sharpening, chairmaking joinery techniques and the creation of a personal stool and a Windsor chair. Jack hopes to continue working for Bobby post-Apprenticeship and his long-term plan is to start his own business.

Furniture making apprenticeships are rooted in tradition, and this apprenticeship would continue that lineage, and be an embodiment of the idea that knowledge is not owned, but is there to be shared for the benefit of all.
