Kate Rochester

2021 QEST Benefact Trust Scholar - Bookbinding
London

After completing her BA, Kate studied bookbinding at the London College of Printing and she founded Hanbury Press in 2004, producing limited edition books and printed papers using traditional hand-binding methods. She also works part-time for the Wyvern Bindery.

A QEST Scholarship will fund one-on-one training with three master craftspeople. She will study with Midori Kunikata-Cockram, learning about Japanese papers and the best structures for paper, while Flora Ginn will provide tips on gold finishing techniques. With Nicky Oliver of Black Fox Bindery she will focus on mastering traditional fine binding-skills and learning niche techniques that will enhance her work.

Her main objective is to work on special editions and unique copies that can be shown in exhibitions, museums, galleries and private collections.

I love the alchemy that happens when you make a book and with my own designs I hope to create some wonder for anyone who comes across them.
