Laura Thomas

2019 QEST Ashley Family Foundation Scholar - Weaving
Cardiff

Laura is an award-winning woven textile artist and designer specializing in the production of striking textiles for contemporary spaces. A graduate of Birmingham City University, the Royal College of Art and The Ann Sutton Foundation, Laura established her studio practice in South Wales in 2004. Since then she has worked on an extremely diverse range of projects spanning public art, commercial textile design, curation, artist residencies and creating work for exhibition.

This breadth of practice and multi-faceted approach has made her somewhat unusual in the woven textiles sphere. Whether it be site-specific art or contract upholstery design, underpinning all of Laura’s work is an inherent practical curiosity to exploit weave principles, celebrate the beauty of yarns and create striking aesthetics for this ancient craft.

In 2019 Laura was awarded a QEST Scholarship to undertake specialist training in dyeing, to develop a more painterly way of using colour in her artworks.

Core to my practice is the desire to surprise and delight viewers of my work. I like to provoke curiosity particularly through the juxtaposition of hard and soft materials, taking traditional weaving into new territory.
