Max Bainbridge

2019 QEST Winch Design Scholar - Woodturning
London

Based in Somerset, established contemporary artist and woodturner Max is inspired by the natural world. Co-founder of the studio practice Forest + Found, he explores traditional ways of working to produce contemporary sculptural objects. Entirely self-taught, the goal of Max’s work is to highlight the possibilities of woodturning.

With support from QEST, Max will undertake five days of one to one training with Phil Irons, master of hollow-form vessels, at his studio in Warwickshire and a further five days one to one with Glenn Lucas, master of production turning, in County Carlow, Ireland. He will also take two short courses at Capel Manor College in Middlesex.

Working with wood sourced directly from the landscape, Max’s work forms a deep connection to place through the ritualistic relationships he builds between objects and their origin.
