Melissa is a decorative artist and designer working from her studio in Hastings on the Sussex coast. She hand paints textiles and interiors with all sorts of pattern and has developed a “fresco secco” technique that allows her to age and distress the paintwork resulting in her signature "patina of time”. She specialises in Elizabethan painted interiors and the work of the “painter stainers”.
QEST helped Melissa become an established name in both the heritage and the lifestyle & interiors sectors. Her funding helped expand her knowledge and experience whilst the marketing and press she received consequently have been an invaluable source of commissions. Being a QEST scholar has helped raise her profile and led to unique career boosting opportunities.
Since her award Melissa has created fabric & wallpaper collections with Zoffany and Lewis & Wood and she continues to take commissions for private clients, interior designers and historic houses. At QEST events she has sold her work at the General Trading Co and Fortnum & Mason. For the Queen’s Coronation in 2013 she was invited to paint a huge landscape mural for the summer house at Buckingham Palace. Recently she completed a Tudor painted cloth for the Weald & Downland Museum, Chichester and is currently supplying painted cushions to Le Bon Marche department store in Paris. In the pipeline are further fabric & wallpaper collections and an online shop
