Frances Priest

2020 QEST Johnnie Walker Scholar - Ceramics & Tile Making
Edinburgh

Edinburgh-based maker Frances creates intricate and colourful ceramic works which explore and interpret languages of ornament from different cultures, locations and periods in history. Beyond the studio, Frances develops projects and commissions that respond to people and places, and in December 2018 she completed ‘The Tiled Corridor’, a large-scale decorative tile scheme for The Royal Edinburgh Hospital, in collaboration with Craven Dunnill Jackfield – the leading global manufacturer of traditionally-styled, decorative ceramics tiles.

With support from QEST, Frances will train with Craven Dunnill Jackfield, working directly on the factory floor to gain an in-depth understanding of all aspects of encaustic and moulded tile manufacture, supported by archival research at Jackfield Tile Museum and The Minton Paper Archive. This training will enable her to incorporate heritage manufacturing skills within her contemporary ceramic practice, and develop further work for interiors and architectural settings.
